Barton Scout Group trip to Ypres

Date: 30th Oct 2018 Author: Jacky Bottrill

35 members of Barton Scout Group spent 3 days in Ypres in Belgium. They visited several war museums and cemeteries and the Coming World Art Installation.

They also took part in the Last Post Ceremony at The Menin Gate and a Beaver and a Cub, with a leader and an Explorer escorting them, laid 2 wreaths, one on behalf of Barton Scout Group and the other on behalf of Barton Village in memory of the men from Barton who fell in the Great War.

The whole party found it was an incredible experience which nobody will forget in a hurry. It was obvious that the sheer scale and horror of all the things seen moved the adults and children but time was also taken to enjoy the time together as Scouts. Various comments overheard included this most poignant one made  by an 8 year old Cub when visiting the second war cemetery,  “It’s like that other place, it just goes on and on. There are no words”
