About us

Richmondshire Scout District in North Yorkshire is geographically one of the largest rural Scout Districts in England.

It has a unique connection with the founder of Scouting, Robert Baden Powell, who was stationed at Richmond Castle as its commander and was involved in the setting up of Catterick Garrison for the British Army.

Every week in Richmondshire over 400 young people aged 6 to 18 from different backgrounds and abilities enjoy the fun challenges and adventures Scouting has to offer. It helps children and young people reach their full potential and develops skills including leadership, teamwork, initiative, communication, time management, planning, self-motivation and commitment.

Currently we have six Groups open and two Explorer Units supported by over 80 adult volunteers who act as leaders, helpers, members of EXEC’s and carry out numerous other roles. The Groups are based in Barton, Catterick Village which includes young people from Brompton on Swale, Catterick Garrison, Richmond, Swaledale, and Wensleydale in Leyburn.

HM King Charles III has been confirmed as our new Patron, a great honour for UK Scouts.

The King continues a long tradition of the monarch giving their Patronage, dating back to 1912. This was when Scouts was granted its Royal Charter and HM George V became our first Patron.
